The pregnant man who conceived a child
The pregnant man who conceived a child after a gender-reassignment operation has apparently given birth to a healthy baby girl.
“She’s really cute, really pretty,” a source told ABC News.
Thomas Beatie, 34, told People magazine that he had given birth at a hospital in Bend, Oregon on Sunday. “The only thing different about me is that I can’t breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don’t,” he said, adding that he planned to publish a book about the experience this autumn.
The bearded Mr Beatie was born a girl and named Tracy Lagondino, but had gender-reassignment surgery and is now legally male and married to Nancy. The couple, together for ten years, run a custom screenprinting business in Bend.

He decided to get pregnant because his wife had had a hysterectomy. He was able to conceive because he kept his female organs when he switched genders.
To conceive, Mr Beatie stopped the bimonthly testosterone injections he was receiving as part of his sex change.
The couple bought anonymous donor vials from a sperm bank and, struggling to find a doctor willing to help them, resorted to home insemination with a syringe bought from a vet that is typically used to feed birds.
“I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Mr Beatie told the TV talk-show host Oprah Winfrey in April. “I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” he said.
Mr Beatie caused a sensation when he went public with his pregnancy in Advocate, a gay magazine. He posed holding his bulging naked stomach for a photograph reminiscent of Demi Moore’s headline-grabbing 1991 cover photo for Vanity Fair. “How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible,” he wrote. “I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family,” he said.
A cameraman for the TMZ website filmed him leaving the hospital in a hooded sweatshirt, without a bulging stomach. In his Advocate article, Mr Beatie recounted the struggles he faced to have a child.
“Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognise Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender,” he said. His first successful insemination ended in a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy with triplets, resulting in the loss of all his embryos and his right Fallopian tube. “When my brother found out about my loss, he said, ‘It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been?,” he wrote.
Mr Beatie has said he may have more children, once he has experienced fatherhood.

People will probably claim I am being "intolerant" when I say this.. oh well, here goes.As someone who has taken quite a few Psychology classes and done quite a bit of research of gender identity / transexualism, I am definitely no expert but I feel like I have a pretty good idea of most of it.Having said that, this whole "pregnant man" thing is bullshit.I am all for transexuals living happy lives and being who they are... but there has to be a limit for Christ's sake..
Tolerance and acceptance only go so far.Thomas Beatie is just disgusting."He" is not a "he".The reason I say this is because "he" has forfeited "his" right to be called a man because of the fact that "he" is pregnant and having a baby.I think that's probably the only thing that could invalidate a trans man's gender identity.Thomas Beatie (she) went through all that work to become a man and actually achieved it.. but..She stopped her male hormones for the most part..
So that means that her body is not even primarily chemically male anymore. She still has a beard, but that's about it.There has to be a limit here.. You can't become a man in almost every biological sense of the word and then say "Oh you know what, I'm gonna' get pregnant!"That's just wrong. It's essentially stabbing your gender identity in the back. This woman is very mentally sick. She claims that giving birth is a "human" thing.. bullshit..
She may have had a sex change op, but if there is still a womb in there the only conclusion that i can come up with is that this person is still a woman and there is no real story here WOMAN HAS BABY is an everyday occurence.....jimmy
The issue with pronouns is that they are language constructs. Language is for the purpose of conveying meaning, but, as has been discussed throughout the ages by philosophers and poets, language often fails miserably to do precisely what it's wielders would have it do.
In no case is this imprecision more obvious than in the pronoun usage in a situation like this. One use of "he" and "she" here is clearly meant to communicate the larger concept of physiological gender, that is the possession of ovaries and wombs etc, vs. the possession of testicles and the like. The other obvious meaning is one of psycological or cognitive gender, which has to do with how one fits into certain behavioral roles... traditional "mommy" vs. traditional "daddy" sort of thing. It get's more complex than that, obviously, but my point is that the debate often becomes one of pronouns when it's really about accepting or denying gender identity as a something subject to genitalia alone.
The pronoun "confusion" seems like a way for people to just get around saying what they really feel.
This was informative, Iws wondering how he was able to give birth...thanks forthe info...I guess in a changig wrdathing is possible and een acceptable...
I heard that s/he did not have a c-section, but gave birth naturally? I'm interested to read his/her book for that alone, given that if I opted to become a man, I'd go all the way. Which means not leaving my bits intact, especially not that interesting bit that the baby pops out of.
The only issue I really see with this is as someone stated above; s/he's still a woman. Physically, s/he has all her bits, s/he just added a few male bits as well. I can't see how someone can identify as male and do something so essentially un-male. The male of our species (and most species, save for seahorses, I'm pretty sure) do not have babies. To be honest, I've never met or spoken to a male (and I have primarily male friends) who would be even remotely willing to put their body through that.
S/he can say it's a human urge all s/he likes. And it is a human urge to procreate, I won't argue that. Men like to continue their line. So do women. But women are designed to carry the babies, men are not. To truly identify as male, I should think that one would accept that fact.
Perhaps s/he is actually identifying as a hermaphrodite, but since there's no legal status for that, s/he opted for male?
The fact that Thomas wishes to be called a man has to be respected. He is a MAN because that is what he feels like. He has a beard he has no breasts. The reason why he still has female genitalia is because female to male surgeries are very difficult and not as advanced as male to female surgeries which now a days are so succesful, no one can tell these women have had surgery. Just because he had a child does not make him less of a man. He did it becuase his wife couldnt carry the child. Its no one's business what is in his underwear as long as he is a good citizen, a good father, and a good man.
THAT IS CRAZY

it is his body and can do with it what he pleases. The only concern I have is for the saftey of the family and the child. Since this has become such a news story and brought to the media's attention, I would be afraid of threats of violence to this family from people who completely disagree with this and feel the need to impose that opinion on this family.
